Autism - How I see it in my practice

I am a homeopath, not a neuroscientist, nor a gastroenterologist, biochemist, dietician, or nutritionist. Autism is a condition that is complex and difficult. Most of what I know about autism I have learned from the many children I have treated and am still treating, and from their parents and other family members. The rest I had to learn by reading, attending courses, webinars, and conferences. And the learning never stops.

In my understanding (and that of many others) most Autism is caused by toxic overload followed by a break-down of various body systems. Why some children are able to deal with the amount of toxins we expose them (and ourselves) to nowadays and why others are not, may be due to genetic predisposition. But as we now know, genes over time can be switched on and off, by many factors (and this would be a reason for questioning the practice of vaccinating all children without at least testing for sensitivities - but more about this on the Vaccinations page).
In the last six years I have seen 331 autistic children in my small practice. In 80% or more of cases the story is one of regressive autism: up to the age of 15 to 24 months the child develops normally, meeting all the expected milestones, good eye-contact, first words, engaging with the world around them. Then something happens and within a shorter or longer period of time, the child regresses. Eye contact is lost, speech is lost, the child withdraws from the world around him or her, repetitive behaviours start, tip-toe walking may start, proper sleep becomes an issue, there is sensitiveness to noise or to touch or other such sensory processing issues. Very often there are problems with appetite and digestion: extremely limited diet, diarrhoea and/or constipation both often chronic, and so on. Some seem not to be able to chew their food at all. Many are not “potty trained” even as teenagers. Some play with their excrements and smear them on floors and walls if allowed to. Some need to have something in their hand at all times, some need to put something in their mouth all the time; some make spinning movements with their fingers or wave their hands in the air. And there are many more of these particular behaviours.

There can be total withdrawal and lethargy, I have seen children who look and behave as if they are in a state of permanent shock. Others are in a state of permanent hyper-activity, yet they, too, are often withdrawn from this world – they seem to live in a world of their own. For brief moments, they may join our world.

You might find them giggling and/or crying out of the blue, without any apparent reason. Some harm themselves, sometimes severely: hitting their head against walls and other hard surfaces, hitting themselves furiously; I have seen wounds and deep scars on children who keep biting and hitting themselves (and scars on their mothers’ bodies, too).

Some never say a word, others constantly babble, yet others try to speak and only indistinct sounds come out. Some children suddenly say a word or two and then lose these words again. Most children understand, even though often they don’t appear to. They may hold their ears when you talk about them or get agitated. You can see it in the short eye contact they may give you or in gestures or postures. Here is a link to a powerful, short video about an autistic girl who, when taught to type, shows that she has understood everything around her.

More than with other children in see in my practice, pregnancy, birth and first year of life did not go so smoothly: IVF children, children delivered through Caesarean, Ventouse or forceps; bottle-fed children whose mothers were not able to produce enough milk, or found the process too painful, or the child refused the milk. Then maybe a vicious cycle of ear infections and upper respiratory infections suppressed by repeated courses of antibiotics begins. Soon followed by problems with digestion, for which more drugs are given. Then more vaccines, the first MMR and boosters of others. In many instances the parents say “It started after that vaccine”.

So, in short Autism, or more correctly Autism Spectrum Disorder, is a label for wide collection of symptoms that show some form of inflammation of the brain and more often than not also a dysbiosis of the gut = an imbalance of the microbes that colonise our intestines. The connection between gut and brain is usually not acknowledged by mainstream medicine, although growing research and insights into the human microbiome are getting more widely known. More about the microbiome in section five below. Click here to read a recent study about brain inflammation.

Autism and Homeopathy

Please note that because I treat many children who are on the autism spectrum and talk about vaccination, I am constantly under attack from some people who will have to consult their own conscience as to why they do this. On the Internet you will find several links to articles about me, claiming all manner of things. If you have any concerns or doubts, please phone me.

Please note also that there are currently no double-blinded, placebo-controlled studies about the treatment of autism with homeopathy. Nor have the FDA, CDC, DH, ASA, TS or any other of all the important bodies looking after your health, approved of the help that homeopathy can offer autistic children. There is, though, a lot of clinical evidence; many cases of improvement have been reported by parents themselves on internet sites, several books have been written.

As said above, for the last six years I am almost exclusively treating children with autism or autism spectrum disorders. This is because parents have seen improvements in their children which they attributed to the homeopathic treatment and have then told other parents about me.

If you have read my page about homeopathy, you will have understood that homeopathy does not treat a named disease or condition but a person with that condition. We do not have specific remedies for “autism” or “learning difficulties” or “attention deficit”. We have remedies for children with autism and learning difficulties and restlessness. This is a big difference, because each autistic child might need a different remedy, although some remedies seem to suit these children better than others.

A careful selection of homeopathic remedies seems to stimulate the child's immune system to recover or improve in such a way that the usual symptoms associated with autism begin to recede in many children.

Apart from classical homeopathic treatment, I also use the CEASE therapy where appropriate. According to J.B. Handley, co-founder of Generation Rescue, Jenny McCarthy’s autism organisation “the CEASE approach to treating autism …stands out among many others for its clarity, simplicity, and, perhaps most importantly, its focus on cause. The fact that it costs a fraction of some other therapies is a bonus and makes it accessible to parents staggering under the cost of treating their autistic child”. (J.B. Handley, in the foreword to Dr. Tinus Smits’ book Autism Beyond Despair – Cease Therapy – Homeopathy has the answers)

The therapy was developed by Dutch Homeopath Dr. Tinus Smits, who until his death in early April 2010 is said to have successfully treated over 300 autistic children. You can read more about this therapy on the CEASE website

If you are looking for homeopathic treatment for your child and would like to know more, please contact me. I offer a free initial consultation where you can ask all your questions and learn more about what I do.

My first advice even before you contact me is: Make yourself knowledgeable about the connection between inappropriate diet, an unhealthy gut and chronic illnesses, including autism! I have seen children improve significantly n diet alone, by eliminating gluten, sugar and dairy for some time. Many parents will testify to this. More information can be found, for example, on Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride's GAPS diet website . She also has written books on the topic. Another interesting book about the great importance of gut health I can recommend is "Fire in your belly" by Dr. Keith Scott-Mumby. And there are many more; see the Resources section below.
